-Thomas S. Gowing
If you are one of our bearded readers, I’m sure that you will look like a baby in arms if you decide to shave, no acid test needed. Why does the beard make you look older, wiser, mature, and in some cases, manlier?
We have accepted this idea, maybe unconsciously. Seen from a social aspect, the best men in their respective fields, the geniuses, are bearded (most of the times, not always): Plato, Aristotle, Lincoln, Freud, Jesus, Confucius, Einstein, Santa Claus, and many more. So we relate the idea of the beard with the genius of that field: psychology (Freud), physics (Einstein), philosophy (Plato), mathematics (Pythagoras), politics (Lincoln), and the greatest of the Greek gods, Zeus. Maybe the beard has a relation, and this geniality also made them have beards! Or maybe they just didn’t have enough time to shave, Leonardo Da Vinci had much work to do, he wasn’t going to waste time shaving…
There are curious social behaviors that will be shown in further articles, but here is a little intro. For example, many times I have been treated differently because of having a beard, people have treated me in a more respectful way, than I have been treated if am clean shaven. At restaurants, waiters pay more attention, or at college I am treated in a better way if you I look more mature. Sometimes I was able to buy alcoholic drinks without being old enough, but I had a beard so I looked older. I could walk inside clubs without showing my ID, because I had a beard so I looked older. In several occasions, having a beard has helped me in getting more respect from others.
We can also analyze the beard effects from a scientific point of view. I have discussed the relation between beard and sexual selection with some doctors, and it is truly boring. But basically, their main conclusion is: a man’s beard develops when the sexual maturity is reached, increasing the amount of testosterone. Considering it as a secondary sexual characteristic, it also plays its part in sexual selection. The beard can be a man’s tool to exhibit his manliness without getting undressed.
Thinking of nature purposes, an organism will always seek to reproduce a great number of offspring. And talking about animals, the healthiest one, will always be chosen instinctively. And here come the secondary sexual characteristics which inform how developed the partner is. For instance, lions will choose the healthiest lionesses, the one who has better hair and nails, which are indicators of health, and vice versa with the lion’s mane. The beard is the natural men’s ornament, as the deer’s uses its antlers to show their masculinity, but we don’t hit each other with our beards!
In conclusion, we consider the bearded men stronger, the bearded teachers wiser, and a bearded psychopath scarier! So this Christmas keep calm and grow a beard!
