We’ve all heard stories about models and celebrities insuring their legs, their hands and other body parts. It’s a little odd, but it makes sense in a way. Those are the things that allow them to make their living, and insuring them is a smart decision. Lloyd’s of London is one of the best-known companies when it comes to insuring the odd, and they seem to have upped the ante lately. We’re talking facial hair insurance.

Who’s Insuring Their Facial Hair?

While beard insurance might sound a little strange at first, when you hear who’s doing the insuring, it makes a little more sense. One of the most recent newly insured people (yes, there’s more than one) is Billy Gibbons, of the rock band ZZ Top. While he did not say how much his beard was worth, it’s understandable that he’d want protection for it. That’s probably not the strangest thing that Lloyd’s has insured, though. After all, the insurance company has been around for over 300 years and has probably seen some bizarre things during that time.

Lloyd’s has insured other people’s facial hair, as well. For instance, Merv Hughes, a cricket player from Australia, insured his moustache with the company. The members of an English whisker club also insured their facial hair with the company years ago, long before the current beard craze.

This might be the first rumblings of a new trend. As beards become more and more commonplace, they may be adopted by other high-profile individuals, who will become known more for their facial hair than for their clean-shaven cheekbones. For those people, insuring their beard would make smart financial sense.

Of course, there are plenty of people predicting that the beard is now about to decline in popularity, as hipsters start to age and the new elite takes over. Clean-shaven might be the style of the future. With that being said, there is plenty of evidence that the beard craze is only just beginning, and that’s good news for barbershops, shave companies and even for insurance companies, apparently. You only need to look to the growing number of beard competitions and even medical breakthroughs associated with facial hair.

So, if you’re planning to grow a beard and let that become your public image, it’s good to know that help is at hand for protecting your facial forest. And you’ll be in good company, too.
