Clik here to view. Why do men grow beards? Is it all down to modern fashion? While hipsters certainly helped spur the popularity of the modern beard, it has really only been in the last 50 years or so that wearing them declined in popularity in the first place. However, a new study being conducted on this odd topic proves that beards are anything but at the mercy of fashion trends.
Warmth
Yes, the time-worn excuse that beards are nature’s insulation for a man’s face seems to be true. Just like hair on your head, facial hair can keep your cheeks, chin and even neck warmer during chilly weather. So, for at least some men, the choice to grow a beard is about comfort, particularly when they have to be outdoors during the winter.
Political Statements
You don’t need to look very far back in time to find many examples of facial hair being used as part of political statements. For example, if you were a Frenchman and you shaved your face during the revolutionary period, then you were definitely not a royalist. If you were a Republican, you might spot sideburns. If you were a follower of Napoleon, you’d probably have worn a mustache and a tuft of hair under the bottom lip, but not a beard.
Religion
Beards and religion go hand in hand, even today. The examples are everywhere. Think of the Amish and their iconic beards. Think of Muslims, or of Sikhs. Think of the followers of Hinduism, or even Judaism. Yes, beards tie in with religion, and many different ones have specific requirements in terms of length, style and care.
As a Sign of Masculinity
In today’s world, men who want to be manly have fewer options than ever before. Most won’t (or can’t) go out and lop down trees. They don’t have the time or inclination for wood working or metal working. It’s tough to be a cowpoke in the big city. Bereft of many of the once-traditional trappings of masculinity, some men are turning to beards to help them show their manliness. This is at least, part of the hipster obsession with facial hair, although why it’s paired with skinny jeans and suspenders is anyone’s guess.
There are as many reasons for men to grow beards as there are facial hair-sporting men in the world. If you’re looking for a reason to grow one, take your pick.
